GIF to PNG
Converting GIF to PNG
Image formats are trade-offs between quality, size, and features, and converting GIF to PNG means re-encoding pixels under new rules. JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photos; PNG is lossless with transparency; WebP is the modern all-rounder — typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality.
The One-Way Street
Converting from a lossy format (JPG) to a lossless one (PNG) never restores lost quality — it just makes a bigger file containing the same degraded pixels. The damage happens at the first lossy save. Going the other direction (PNG → JPG/WebP) is where the real savings are: photos often shrink 70%+ with no visible change.
Practical Tips
Photos for the web: WebP or JPG. Graphics with sharp edges or transparency: PNG or WebP. Archiving originals: keep a lossless master and export lossy copies. And strip metadata (EXIF) from images you publish — it can leak your location.
