What Is SHA3-224?

SHA3-224 is the 224-bit variant of SHA-3, the NIST-standardized Keccak sponge function (2015). Unlike SHA-2's Merkle–Damgård construction, SHA-3 absorbs input into a large internal state and squeezes output out — a fundamentally different design that shares no attack surface with SHA-2.

Why a Second Standard?

SHA-3 exists as insurance: if SHA-2 ever falls, the world needs an already-deployed alternative, not a scramble. Its sponge construction also makes length-extension attacks structurally impossible — a weakness SHA-2 only avoids with careful HMAC wrapping.

When to Use It

Protocols designed after 2015, post-quantum-hybrid schemes, and anywhere a standard explicitly names SHA-3. For general checksums, SHA-256 remains the simpler choice.

How to Use the SHA-3 224 Hash Generator

SHA-3-224 is the smallest member of the NIST-standardised Keccak family, producing a compact 224-bit digest for protocols where bandwidth or storage is limited.

  1. Paste the input for SHA3-224 — the Keccak-based 224-bit NIST standard hash.
  2. Click the hash button to compute the 224-bit Keccak digest.
  3. Copy the 56-character hexadecimal result for compact checksums, tokens or constrained-protocol fields.

Example

Hashing the word hello with SHA-3-224 always produces b87f88c72702fff1748e58b87e9141a42c0dbedc29a78cb0d4a5cd81 — only 56 hexadecimal characters, noticeably shorter than its SHA-3 siblings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SHA-3-224 less secure than SHA-3-256?
Slightly — its collision resistance is about 112 bits, comparable to a 112-bit symmetric key. That is still far beyond practical attack, but new designs usually pick 256-bit sizes.

Why does a smaller SHA-3 variant exist?
Some protocols and hardware allocate fixed, narrow fields for digests. SHA-3-224 gives those systems a modern sponge-based hash without the overhead of a full 256-bit output.

Can I compare SHA-3-224 with SHA-224?
Only by output length — the values are unrelated. SHA-224 is a truncated SHA-256, while SHA-3-224 is a true Keccak variant with its own initialisation.
